This specification provides guidance to manufacturers who are interested in developing products that not only meet ENERGY STAR criteria but are able to provide high levels of consumer satisfaction and energy performance in cooler, northern climates. The specification was updated September 9, 2014 with Appendices F and G. A media backgrounder document, product assessment worksheet and product list is also available.

DOE published a final rule prescribing new energy conservation standards for consumer water heaters. 75 FR 20112 (April 16, 2010). The consumer water heater energy conservation standard rulemaking docket EERE-2006-BT-STD-0129 contains all notices, public comments, public meeting transcripts, and supporting documents pertaining to this rulemaking.

Recently several manufacturers, including General Electric (GE), Rheem, AO Smith, Stiebel Eltron, and Air Generate, have introduced integrated HPWHs. Performance, installation, operation and maintenance, specifically related to the New England region are addressed.

The CEE Overview of Heat Pump Water Heater Programs in the United States and Canada summarizes programs active in 2016 that were designed to promote the purchase and installation of efficient heat pump water heaters (HPWHs). The 56 CEE members included in this year's Program Overview span 33 US states, the District of Columbia, and one Canadian province. They collectively serve more than 60 million residents.
